讲座摘要

Inthis talk, we consider the manpower optimization problem for a manufacturingcompanywith a hierarchy system ofMlevels. We take both the manufacturing plantworkers and managerial staffinto account. The aim of the problem is to minimizethe total human resource cost at the end of the timehorizon, while maximizingthe total output. The problem is subject to a series of chance constraints, forwhichthe number of staff operating in each level is ensured to satisfy theminimum number requirement with aspecified probability. This manpoweroptimization problem can naturally formulated as a stochastic discrete-timeoptimal control problem. We then show that this stochastic optimal controlproblem is equivalent toa deterministic optimal control problem. It is furthershown that the deterministic optimal control problemcan be reduced to anequivalent linear programming problem, which can be solved very efficiently byusingthe interior-point algorithm. Finally, we conclude the paper withnumerical simulations using real data fromSingapore, Denmark and China.
