We introduce a new tensor decomposition for third order tensors, which decomposes a third order tensor to three third order factor tensors. Each factor tensor has two low dimensions. We call such decomposition the triple decomposition, and the corresponding rank the triple rank. The triple rank of a third order tensor is not greater than the middle value of the Tucker rank. The theoretical discovery is confirmed numerically. Numerical tests show that third order tensor data from practical applications such as internet traffic and image are of low triple ranks. A tensor recovery method based on low rank triple decomposition is proposed. Its convergence and convergence rate are established. Numerical experiments confirm the efficiency of this method.

陈艳男,博士,华南师范大学副教授。陈艳男博士于2013年在南京师范大学获得博士学位。陈博士已发表SCI论文20余篇,代表性论文发表于SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, SIAM Journal on Scientific Computing, Mathematics of Computation等国际刊物,参与撰写了一本专著《Tensor Eigenvalues and Their Applications》在Springer出版,现主持国家自然科学基金面上项目1项和广东省基础与应用基础研究项目1项,获得2020年度广东省自然科学奖二等奖。
